Firefighter cadets must undergo 9 months of Fire School and a month of Emergency Medical Responder training. Once a cadet has completed these programs they graduate to probationary firefighter. Upon completion of six months of service, and an evaluation by station officers a probationary firefighter may become a firefighter. Upon the completion of their initial programs nearly $7,500 will be invested into the firefighter.

Firefighters with Grand Traverse Rural must also attend monthly trainings, and there are additional station trainings which usually occur once a week. Skills such as fire fighting, command, pump engineering and emergency rescue will be addressed on a regular basis.
